We feel very sad for the people of Japan who want to end nuclear energy whilst a potential new government and big business are desperate for it

No Fukushima at Oldbury

Horizon Nuclear Power to close or be sold on?

As we are now aware RWE and e.on have announced that they will not be building new nuclear power plants at Wylfa and Oldbury due to their dissatisfaction with UK government policy.

This means the closure of Horizon Nuclear Energy, the joint venture company they launched in 2010 .

We at SANE are pleased with this outcome but are very concerned that the large German energy utilities may use this as a strategy to put extreme pressure on the UK government and we as the people.

One question worth asking is "What will they do with the sites and land at Wylfa and Oldbury? They could act honourably and sell it on to a new purchaser at the proper market price....The price is very low due to the total unsuitability of both sites....or they could play hardball with the government, ask an extortionate amount of money for them effectively removing two of , the so-say, suitable sites from the list of eight.....I suppose it's watch this space"

Reg Illingworth of SANE says " Our work continues, as always we will be vigilant and our determination to include ethics into what the government see as a purely economic and political decision will help us in our quest.

This government and future ones must always consider the burden of nuclear energy to future generations as well as our own

Hopefully there will be no new nuclear at Oldbury and Wylfa and the country invests in renewables to become world leaders in wave and tidal power, amongst others.

We cannot rely on large, global energy companies to provide the British people with the proper energy infrastructure that we need , surely we have learn't this after the many years of energy liberalisation?"

Let's bring power generation back to the people, we have the energy for it!!

  1. Sadly it looks from today's headlines that Huhne is pressing on with the madness.

No subsidy ? Well we will subsidise new nuclear - like it or not - through increased electricity bills.
